Letter from Lady Catherine Herries to Mary Hamilton. The letter relates to the death of Sir William Hamilton (HAM/1/4/4<\/a>) and to Herries's previous letter in which she asked Hamilton for letter of recommendations on the behalf of a friend of her brother's (HAM/1/17/273).<\/p>

Herries refers to her previous letter asking Hamilton and her husband for letter of recommendations for her brother Edward Foote's friend, who is currently quartered in Northampton and who she describes as a 'Gentleman both by birth & manners'. When she wrote her previous letter, she had only just heard of the serious illness of Hamilton's uncle, Sir William Hamilton, and had only heard of his death the day after. She feels for Hamilton's loss and, 'though many Circumstances as I said in my last must have weakened the attachment you naturally had for this near Relation', she knows Hamilton will still feel his death greatly. Herries should have written sooner on the subject but was expecting to hear from Hamilton herself, and now feels 'uneasy' at not having a line from her. She asks for a word from her to let her know that she and her family are well.<\/p>

Captain Edward Foote has left Cheltenham for London on matters relating to his divorce proceedings. Once the business is over, Herries will tell Hamilton the 'particulars', which is impossible for her to do at present.<\/p>
