Like his son Heinrich in his letter to Eduard Kaiser of 28 August 1817 (SIM/1/5), Herrmann provides an account of the violent confrontation between the Breslau authorities and a group of citizens who had participated in the military drills of the Landwehr but had refused to swear a military oath.
