   "value": "<p style='text-align: justify;'>Laennec monaural (one-ear) stethoscope in walnut wood. Dr. René Laennec (1781-1826) invented the stethoscope. He found it embarrassing to listen to the breath-sounds of his female patients by putting his ear directly on the chest, so he used a tube of rolled-up papers as a listening tube that amplified the sound. He made a wooden version in 1816, that could be separated into three pieces for easy transportation. This instrument is a later example, but is made to Laennec\u2019s original design.<\/p>"
