   "value": "<p>Leaf [b8] (fol. 22) only, containing text on the recto and the full-page woodcut of the judgement of God (Death and the ploughman appear before God seated on a throne, between two angels, under a sky dotted with stars) on the verso. Beneath the text on the recto is written in black ink \"Tribunal mortis\". The whole leaf has been ruled in red, remargined and mounted on a leaf of old paper in which a window has been cut to hold the Ackermann aus Böhmen leaf. Written in pencil in an unknown late eighteenth- or early nineteenth-century hand in the lower margin on the verso is \"The Book of Fables bound up with this[?] and with the same type is[?] dated 1461, see p. 13 ...\", the rest is illegible.<\/p><p>Leaves, heavily cut down.<\/p><p>Decoration: capital strokes supplied in red; the woodcut is hand-coloured.<\/p><p>Evidence of an early three figure leaf number, mostly cropped off, on the recto.<\/p>"

   "value": "<p>Probably part of a sammelband which included several other Pfister books found in the library of the Carmelites at Würzburg by Alexander Schmötzer (1748-1815) in 1792 and offered to Earl Spencer in 1799 by Jean-Baptiste Maugérard (1735-1815); Spencer declined the whole volume, which was subsequently broken up, possibly by the bookseller James Edwards (1756-1816); Pfister's German Biblia Pauperum (UML copy at 9402) was part of this sammelband; it was sold to Mark Masterman Sykes, who later swapped it with Spencer for 'some Aldine Classics'. What adds not a little to the value of this copy, is, that it contains a leaf of the Allegory of Death, or Complaints against Death, printed also by Albert Pfister; and of which there is a perfect copy in the Bibliothèque Impériale at Paris ... This copy, although somewhat soiled, is in a sound state, and elegantly bound in blue morocco\".<\/p><p>Pencil note in the hand of George Appleyard (d. 1855), Earl Spencer's secretary and librarian, on verso of front free endpaper: \"This is the only copy known to exist of a Latin book printed by Pfister - the same plates & type were employ'd as in the German edition of this work and the same no. of leaves & prints - see p. 11. I have added a leaf ...
