One of three dotted prints which are said originally to have been inserted into the copy of the Gutenberg Bible now in the Huntington Library (Huntington Library 92588). These prints comprised one depicting Calvary (Schreiber 2333, now British Museum 1845,0809.205) and two copies of this print depicting Christ on the Mount of Olives. The three prints are said to have remained with the Bible until 1825, when they were removed and sold separately.

Provenance inferred from the pre-1825 provenance of the Gutenberg Bible in which this print was said to have been inserted. The Bible is in a fifteenth-century binding traditionally assigned to Leipzig, perhaps from the workshop of Johannes Wetterhahn, with decoration also traditionally attributed to Leipzig, perhaps to the circle of Nicolaus Kurssener of Pirna. Also attributed by White, in 'Gutenberg for Sale' as Bohemia, possibly Prague. It contains the ownership inscription of Otto II, Freiherr von Nostitz (1608-1664), and the engraved bookplate of the 'Bibliotheca Maioratus Familiae Nostizianae' in Prague, dated 1774, suggesting that it passed by descent to Friedrich Graf von Nostitz-Rieneck (1762-1819). On 21 May 1813 Alexander Horn wrote to George John, 2nd Earl Spencer about the Bible stating that it had been transferred from 'Count Nostitz' [i.e.: Friedrich Graf von Nostitz-Rieneck (1762-1819)] to 'Count Sternberg' [i.e.: Kašpar Maria Šternberk (1761-1838)]. On 5 August 1813 Alexander Horn wrote to George John, 2nd Earl Spencer that the Bible would be sent to George Nicol (1740?-1828), Pall Mall - see: British Library, Althorp papers, Add. Ms. 75965, cited in White, Editio Princeps, p. 204. Nichol failed to sell the Bible, which was later auctioned through Robert Evans (A catalogue of rare and valuable books, the property of Messrs. G. and W. Nicol (London: Robert Evans, 18 July 1825, lot 378)). At the time of this sale the prints were apparently removed from the Bible and offered separately as lots 806 (Crucifixion), 808 and 809 (two prints of Christ on the Mount of Olives). They are there described as 'taken from the inside cover of the Mazarin Bible' and 'taken from one of the covers of the Mazarin Bible'. This version of events is confirmed by W.Y. Ottley, Inquiry, page 194 and in Catalogue of early German and Flemish woodcuts preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum, volume 1, page 177.

Sir John Soane (1753-1837) acquired one copy of each of the prints at the Nicol sale, 18 July 1825, the other print of Christ on the Mount of Olives acquired by George John, 2nd Earl Spencer at an unknown date (see White, E., Editio princeps, page 207).

Dodgson, C. Woodcuts of the Fifteenth Century in the John Rylands Library Manchester, erroneously suggests that this impression was acquired by William Young Ottley (1771-1836) [from Sir John Soane (1753-1837)] and later sold at the Ottley sale (May 1837) for £2 2s. 0d. to Graves. The print acquired by Graves was actually that sold in 1839 to Lloyd Baker (see: Sotheby's, 25 June 1965, lot 34).
"
