   "value": "<p>A Latin blockbook Biblia pauperum.<\/p><p>The 'Biblia pauperum' probably originated in the mid-thirteenth century in the German south-east and circulated well into the late fifteenth century in manuscript, and from the 1460s typographically and as a blockbook. Its transmission ends with the first quarter of the sixteenth century.<\/p><p>Schreiber edition VI.<\/p><p>Title from incipit on sig. a.<\/p><p>Xylographa Bavarica gives place and date of publication: [Netherlands or Lower Rhine, ca. 1465?].<\/p><p>Schreiber describes edition VI as having 24 plates from edition IV and 16 plates (sigs. a, b, c, d, i, k, l, m, p, q, .c., .d., .l., .m., .t., .v.) newly cut, probably copied from a lost manuscript original or from another early xylographic edition that has not survived.<\/p><p>40 leaves of illustrations and text printed in brown ink on one side only of 20 sheets of paper from 20 woodcut blocks, presumably by rubbing. Arranged in single sheets of two leaves each, each sheet containing two woodcuts printed from a double wood block.<\/p><p>A cycle of 40 panels centred on, but not limited to, scenes from the life of Christ, arranged in two registers on 40 leaves. In the block book cycle these are thematically arranged as follows: Christ's infancy; Egypt; godhead manifested; divine kingship recognised or feared; betrayal prepared; Passion; death and the tomb; resurrection; church established; the next world.<\/p><p>Each panel contains a picture of a New Testament or eschatological event at the centre, flanked by two pictures of Old Testament prefigurations, with the busts of saints and prophets with auctoritates in the upper and lower registers, prophecies and short lessons based on the Old Testament, and Leonine hexameters used as titles for the three pictures.<\/p><p>Signatures: A b-v .a.-.m. n-o .p.-.q. r-s .t.-.v. The signatures are xylographic and appear in each panel below the pillar in the image of the prophets in the upper part, between the scrolls.<\/p><p>Paper format: Chancery folio.<\/p><p>Schreiber distinguishes ten editions of the 40-plate Biblia pauperum blockbook, the first engraved ca. 1463 and the last in 1470 at the earliest. To Schreiber's ten editions Renate Kroll has added an eleventh (see 'Beobachtungen zur Ausgabenfolge der 40blättrigen Biblia pauperum', in Blockbücher des Mittelalters: Bilderfolgen als Lektüre, ed. Gutenberg-Gesellschaft and Gutenberg-Museum (Mainz, 1991), pp. 289-310. These editions can be divided into four groups deriving from editions I, IV, VIII, and X respectively. According to Nigel Palmer (Bodleian 15th cent., discussion of BB-4), edition IV is \"the most likely candidate to be the editio princeps\".<\/p>"
