The Mary Hamilton Papers

Letter from Princess Elizabeth to Mary Hamilton. She begins by writing that she hopes Hamilton is better and that the Prince of Wales 'enquired very much after you'. [The Prince had been infatuated with Hamilton at the age of sixteen, and although she rejected his love, Hamilton did agree to correspond with him as a friend.] The King and Queen had also asked about her, 'and in short every Body'. Elizabeth writes her letter from Lady Charlotte Finch's study, noting enigmatically that there is some very good news, but as she is not good at telling news she will not try on this occasion. She ends the letter abruptly, noting that she is 'obliged' to quit the letter.

Dated at St James's [London].
