<p style='text-align: justify;'>Julie Simon writes to her brother Heinrich about the performances of Die Falsche Catalani and Schiller’s Maria Stuart, in which the Breslau-born actor and poet Carl von Holeit made his debut as Mortimer. Julie asks Heinrich a number of questions, some relating to his watch and watch chain. Ludowika tells him has been diligent in her knitting, which also earned her extra pocket money from their father. With it, she will buy a Christmas gift for Heinrich. Dinner will be late that evening as Herrmann Simon is visiting the neighbours, the Meiers, with whom he plays cards. </p>
