Herrmann Simon offers his brother his fragmentary knowledge of the initial engagements, including heavy losses among the Russian and Prussian troops, and expresses concern for their brother Otto, whom he has not heard from. He expresses his sense of solidarity with his brother Heinrich, promising to look after his wife and children should the need arise.
