<p style='text-align: justify;'>This portrait photograph of Dr Catherine Chisholm BA MB ChB MD FRCP CBE (1878-1952) was taken by Manchester photographer FW Schmidt on occasion of her CBE in 1935, awarded for her work on infant welfare. </p><p style='text-align: justify;'>Dr Chisholm was the first female student to graduate in medicine from the Manchester Medical School in 1904. She wrote her MD thesis on ‘Occurrence of menstrual molimina in normal adolescents & adult women’ in 1912. She founded the Manchester Babies Hospital in 1914, later named the Duchess of York Hospital for Babies. She was also the medical officer for the Manchester High School for Girls, lecturer in vaccination, and children’s physician for the Manchester Northern Hospital and Hope Hospital in Salford.</p>
