Golden Mummies : Ostracon

Golden Mummies

This ostracon – the ancient equivalent of scrap paper – is a reused piece of potsherd with inked notation in 11 lines of Demotic script dated to 102 BCE, in the reign of Queen Cleopatra III and King Ptolemy X. It records the receipt, signed by witnesses, for tax paid on land near the temple complex of Amun at Karnak (modern Luxor) and the production of wine there.
