Text and Image : Crucifixion panel

Text and Image

Panel from a book-cover. The Crucifixion, between the Virgin and St John. The lower extremity, from which the Cross rises, is occupied by imbrications of blue and white and green and yellow, with red centres. The Cross itself, which is ornamented with scroll-work, is green having on its upper limb a Titulus Crucis (Title of the Cross) bearing IHS XPS, on each side of which is half-length figure of an angel holding a book. On the lower limb, beneath the suppedaneum of lapis blue on which Jesus' feet rest, a smaller beardless figure is represented rising from a tomb of lapis blue and relief. The Christ is uncrowned; his nimbus is of concentric circles of metal, incised. The background of the panel is of lapis blue enriched with blue and white and green and yellow rosettes and discs; with two horizontal bands of turquoise in the lower half. The border (25 mm wide) comprises 15 small medallions of angels, on lavender ground, in incised metal with the heads applied and in relief; the medallions are separated by scroll-work on a lapis blue ground.
