Hebrew Manuscripts : Book of the Soothing Tongue

Hebrew Manuscripts

Short manuscript with the Book of the Soothing Tongue, produced on Corfu on Sunday 4 September 1853. The work, of which the title refers to Proverbs 15:4, surveys the order of the liturgy pertaining to the three Watches (משמרות) of Elul and the Ten Days of Penitence (עשרת ימי התשובה) according to the rite of Corfu, without quoting the actual texts that need to be recited by the hazzan and the congregation. Among other things it lists the incipits of liturgical poems and their main place in the liturgy, providing their order for use in the watches of Elul and the Ten Days of Penitence. The title page states that Rabbis Elijah ben Menahem ha-Cohen and Hayyim Shabbetai ha-Cohen have added texts [הוסיפו] to the basic work Marpe lashon. The text is probably incomplete at the end.
