  • Foliation:

    Foliation in Arabic numerals in the top outer corner of each leaf.

    Ealier inconsistent modern pencil foliation in Arabic numerals at the lower outer corner of side a of each folio. Hebrew foliation at top outer corner on both sides of folios 1-16 starting with folio ב, thus the manuscript is incomplete at the beginning.

    Folio 105 is also foliated as first back flyleaf, but that should be ignored.

    Hebrew foliation in ink by the scribe shows that at least one leaf is missing from the beginning (folio 1 = folio ב).

  • Collation:

    Collation is hard to determine due to tight binding. Hebrew catchwords on both sides of each folio.

  • Condition:

    Usage stains, fire damage (folio 15), slight worm damage. Slight iron gall ink corrosion.

    Several fingerprints e.g. on folios 36r and 49r.

  • Layout:

    Long line with 16 written lines and between 17 and 18 ruled lines. Lemmata in larger characters, occupying 2 lines. Pencil drawn margins and dry-stylus ruling.

  • Script:
    Oriental semi-cursive script.
    Oriental square script for headings and intial words.
  • Decoration: Text in double pencil frame.
  • Additions:

    Note in English on folio 99b: "These things which makes enters in making ointments" [sic!].

  • Binding:

    Brown leather binding with blind tooling. Marks of leather ties near fore-edge of both boards.

  • Origin:

    Produced in the 18th or 19th century.

  • Provenance:

    Handwritten label on left board reading in 2 lines in English: "Arabic-Hebrew Ms. / Medical 2005".

    Ownership inscription on endleaf ib by Saul Jacob [...]: "Zealously belongs to Saul Jacob ... 25th May ...". The same hand added the note on folio 99b.

    Ownership inscription by Mr Hakham H. on folio 52b.

  • Acquisition: Acquired by The John Rylands Library from the heirs of Moses Gaster in 1954.
