    A story about a baʿal teshuvah (repentant sinner) called Uḳvaʾ ben Idaʾ who lived in Aram Tsova (Aleppo), based on two rabbinic aggadot: one on Nathan de-Tsutsitaʾ (Shabbat 56b) and one on Elazar ben Dordaya (Avodah Zarah 17a).

    Reference to Aleppo: "במדינת ארם צובה"(e.g. folio 1a, lines 1-2, folio 2a, line 1).

    Beginning "מעשה בעוקבא בירב אידא שהיה במדינת \ ארם צובה וכיון שקרבו ימי אביו \ למות צוה את אברהם בן עזרא ".

    Mentions Abraham ibn Ezra: "והלכה והיא שואלת ממקום למקום עד \ שהגיעה למדינת ארם צובה למדרשו של ר' אבע"ז" (e.g. folios 1b-2a:).

  • Extent: 4 ff. Leaf height: 105 mm, width: 75 mm.
  • Collation:

    Four folios, one loose and three still joined together by tape. Catchword on every b side.

    Usage stains, liquid damage.

    Unbound. In a phase box.

  • Accompanying Material:

    The fragments are stored together with the following items:

    A modern green binding containing an empty envelope with the shelfmark "H 2097" and a smaller envelope with the manuscript fragments;
    a notebook with tipped in photographs of the manuscript fragments, and an empty envelope addressed to M. Gaster. It seems that the notebook with the negative photographs was given a separate Gaster number: 2049.

    Yemenite (or Persian?) square script; in brown ink.
  • Foliation:

    Modern ink foliation in Arabic numerals at the top outer corner of side a of each folio covering the range folio 28-31 (the leaves used to be part of a larger codex).

  • Layout:

    Long line with a maximum of 23 written lines.

  • Origin:

    Produced in Yemen or Persia the 18th-19th century?

  • Acquisition: Acquired by The John Rylands Library from the heirs of Moses Gaster in 1954.
  • Date of Acquisition: 1954
