Latin Manuscripts : Arbor Caritatis et Misercordiae
Latin Manuscripts

Arbor Caritatis et Misericordiae, or Tree of Salvation, produced in Italy in the late 14th century. It features an elaborate representation of a tree with scenes drawn from the Old and New Testaments. The Tree Trunk is ascending vertically and generally composed of circa fourty-one male figures representing the patrilineage of Jesus according to Matthew's Gospel. Matthew begins Jesus’ lineage with Abraham and names each father in fourty-one generations ending (in Matthew 1:16): 'And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.'.
