Tallis's town plan of Manchester; hand coloured map published by John Tallis in 1851, from the General Atlas 1850-1851. Includes vignettes of the Royal Infirmary, Royal Institution, Town Hall, Post Office, Free Library and Collegiate Church.

This is one of the most decorative and sought after town plans of the City to appear in an atlas in the 19th century. It was engraved for R. Montgomery Martin's Illustrated Atlas. Tallis was one of the last great decorative map makers. His maps are prized for the wonderful vignettes of indigenous scenes, people, etc. The town plans engraved by Tallis appear in only a small percentage of his works, making them harder to obtain than his regional maps.
