Japanese Maps : Jissoku Nihon chizu

Japanese Maps

Complete map of Japan, in four sheets, published by the Kanseijo 開成所, a school of foreign studies set up by the military Tokugawa government (1603-1868). The seal of the publisher is on the map, while the date of publication is reported in Beans (1951). The title is reported on a mounted cover label. The map was based on an earlier (1821) collection of smaller maps, and on the extensive territorial survey of Japan conducted by the cartographer Inō Tadataka (1745-1818) at the beginning of the 19th century.
