The Rigi mountain range in the distance repeatedly captivated Turner who painted the region in diverse atmospheric conditions and at various times of the day and night. Here Turner renders its gentle illumination by moonlight, creating a haunting and ethereal presence beyond the lake. Turner's numerous studies of Swiss mountains and lakes reflect the artist's compulsion to record the intense and ever changeable qualities of light and its transient effect upon the landscape.</p>
