Le Bresil is illustrative of a shift in scenic wallpapers from human scenes to the depiction of “virgin, uninhabited, primeval nature” in the 1840s. Depicting exotic birds and vegetation on a grand scale but excluding human beings.
Exotic birds set in and flying around tropical foliage, suggestion of water and an opposite bank. Peacocks, cockatoo, parrots, doves, kingfishers, humming birds, butterflies and insects. Soft greens, pale blue sky rising to darker blue, and numerous bright colours for the plummage of the birds.
