Ottoman Book Culture

This collection brings together manuscripts for use in teaching. The intention is to introduce the materiality of intellectual and cultural expressions in the Ottoman Empire and to consolidate understanding of its linguistic and cultural variety. There are a number of questions to consider:

• What languages and scripts are these manuscripts written in?
• What other differences can you see between these objects
• What sorts of people wrote and read these manuscripts?
• Why did manuscripts continue to be produced after the invention of printing?
